Another Brick in the Wall
Preparations have begun for our upcoming 2018-19 season at Deir el-Ballas. Already Hassaan Mohamed Ali has supervised the production of 5000 new mud bricks for the restoration of the façade of the “South Palace” which had been perilously undermined by looters. We will also survey the South Wadi and the South Hill and area to assess the condition of the ancient houses, the chapels area, workmen’s village and administrative areas. We will attempt to create perimeter walls around the areas most in danger and record their present condition.
We will also continue the documentation of the North Palace as well as undertake the construction of a perimeter wall to prevent further encroachment by the modern village. Restoration work will also be undertaken beginning with emptying out the trash that has been thrown in the emptied casemate foundations of the palace and re-fill them with clean sand. Fallen mud brick will be replaced and capped with new mud brick and the ancient walls cleared and protected. Our efforts will help preserve this important site for the future.
